Simple Choice

The USA has a simple choice: send aid to nine countries with tens of thousands dead, or hire ONE of these actresses to make ONE movie:
These seven actresses earn $14 million-$15 million per movie: Drew Barrymore, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock, Angelina Jolie and Jodie Foster.
Yup, $165 million PER DAY to occupy Iraq, $40 million to throw a Bush Inaugural, but $15 million to split between nine countries suffering one of the worst natural diasters in a decade. If you're not vomiting, you must be a compassionate conservative.

One of the headlines on the Yahoo! homepage today was something to the effect of "Celebrities Among Those Affected by Tsunami."

They were white celebrities.

Not all were white: "Thailand was shocked and grieved when Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced yesterday that the body of Khun Poom (Bhumi) Jensen, the grandson of His Majesty the King [Bhumibol Adulyadej], and 21-year-old only son of Princess Ubolratana, who went missing when a gigantic wave hit his resort hotel at Khao Lak, was found yesterday at a beach resort in Phang Nga"

The Pakistan cricket team is touring Australia at present, and has been rather desperately checking for family & friends who may have been affected. I think the authorities have said they'll change the planned matches if necessary.
The Australian government (much as I despise & fear them, I owe them truth) has a 'petty cash' amount of around $10 million (Australian dollars) they can donate right up first when something big like this happens, then they see what else may be needed. Perhaps the US government has a similar approach.

To be fair, one name does stick out in that list of actresses. Angelina Jolie does a lot of humanitarian work: I've seen pictures of her holding AIDS babies in Africa and Asia, and I believe that she's an international spokewoman for one of the big charities. This is from IMDb:

Angelina, who is mother to adopted Cambodian son Maddox, explains, "I've taken on the responsibility of donating at least a third of what I earn to humanitarian aid. If anyone thinks the way I look in photos is more important for me than the fact a sick child has food, they are mad." And, gosh, that Reese Witherspoon is so perky I just can't get mad at her!
